Infant and Toddler Wake Windows

Wake windows for babies and toddlers at all ages to promote healthy baby sleep

A baby's wake window is the length of time that a baby can comfortably stay awake before it is time for another sleep, whether that next sleep is a nap, or bedtime. Allowing a baby to sleep by the end of the wake window will prevent the baby from becoming overtired. An overtired baby may become fussy/cranky, struggle to fall asleep, and often struggle to stay asleep.

Some Important Facts about Wake Windows

  • Wake windows tend to be shorter early in the day, and lengthen as the day progresses.
  • If your baby is sleepy much earlier than the time indicated on this chart, allow the nap and see how it goes. If baby's naps are consistently short, it may be important to lengthen the wake window.
  • If you get to the end of the wake window and your baby isn't showing any signs of being ready for sleep, it is a good idea to start preparing for the next nap. Often by the time you finish the nap routine, baby will likely start showing signs that it is time for sleep.
  • Some babies show very clear signs that they are getting ready for sleep, while others never show a single sleepy cue. This is why understanding wake windows can be so important!

Please note that these numbers are meant to be used as a guide only. You will notice that there is a range for each age. Watch the clock, but also watch your baby. Be flexible and always respond to your baby's sleep signals.
