Why Plum?
When I was setting out to set up my own business, I did a lot of research on names. In the Doula and infant sleep world, there are a lot of business names that include the words baby, sleep, happy, sleepy, tiny, dozy, snooze, moon, slumber, dreams, love, little and lullaby. Of course! These are all great words that are aligned with the theme of supporting babies and helping them to sleep.
However, I was hoping for something different. I once heard a case study about the Apple brand, and how the tech company established a name and logo that was completely unrelated to the product they were selling, but became instantly recognizable as a tech product. In fact, the use of the apple word and image was simple, sweet, easy to use and kind of fun, just like their tech products. I liked this idea and decided to go down that path when thinking of my own brand.
It was just a coincidence that I landed on another piece of fruit.
SO WHY PLUM?
A plum, as a fruit, is small and sweet. Where I live in Canada, plums are in season in late summer. When I see a plum tree that is full of fruit, it is such a treat because they aren’t as common as apples or pears in my area. A ripe, freshly-picked plum has a taste like no other!
I also have some Polish heritage, so plum jam, plum donuts and plum candies are all favourites of mine.
In the English language, plum is a word that means good, sweet, and worthy, such as “How did you find such a plum job?” It can also mean “completely” or “entirely” as in “I’m plum tired.”
I am always coming up with nicknames for my kids. Plum is a common one, as in “Let’s go, my little plums!” or “Come on my little plum, it’s time for bed.” Because I’m working with babies, I felt the word fit on all levels. Babies are small, sweet, good, and we love them completely.
This is how I arrived at the use of the word Plum for my brand name.
WHO IS THE PLUM CHILD?
I recently decided to update my business name from Plum Doula Care to The Plum Child. The reason for this change is that the word Doula does not fully articulate the range of services that I offer. Yes, postpartum Doula visits are an important part of my service offering. I also provide an online course, as well as virtual consultations with parents to address any challenges in the newborn, baby or toddler years, in most cases addressing challenges with sleep.
The guidance that I provide to parents in my work is intended to help them to feel confident and empowered in their role as parents. The approach that I recommend is always developmentally appropriate, and respectful of the child. The outcome of the parenting techniques that I teach is a child who is calm, confident, secure, curious, kind, happy and loving. Isn’t that what we all hope for as parents?
Welcome to The Plum Child. I hope you’ll stay and I look forward to getting to know you and your little Plum.
